German Auto giant is planning to invest 100 million euros (approx INR 800 Cr) in India to expand business and for localization of new models. The company has fixed plans to introduce a compact sedan; specifically designed for India market, a compact SUV and a compact hatch in India in coming years. Along with these new models the company also plans to introduce facelift of ongoing models Polo and Vento in coming months. VW India also considering re-introduction of new-generation Passat in India in coming months.
The fastest growing segment in India are compact SUV and compact sedan. VW India dont want to loose the opportunity of bringing new models based on this segments. We already reported that VW India will chop Vento to develop a new compact sedan. The car will have project code VW251\2 and development will start in coming months.
The new compact SUV will be based on VW Taigun Concept which was showcased at 2014 Auto Expo. The compact SUV would rival Ford’s best selling EcoSport and a few upcoming competitors in the same segment from Hyundai and Mahindra. In a compact car market, VW Up is expected to hit India in 2016. The car is currently getting manufactured in VW India’s chakan facility but available only for European market. The VW Up and VW Taigun share the same platform of PQ12 and not MQB.
Apart from these three new models, our sources close to VW confirm that VW also plans to introduce Golf in India in first quarter of 2015. The car has been spotted several times during test runs in India but no solid information was available about the launch of Golf in India.
Mahesh Kodumudi, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India, plans to introduce new generation Passat in India as early as possible. The car will be CKD and will be assembled at VW Group’s facility at Shendre, Aurangabad.
